How to get cited by Perplexity
Perplexity prints numbered sources beside every sentence, which makes it the one assistant where source selection can be watched directly. What it rewards is narrow, current, first-hand pages that answer a question in their opening lines.
Most assistants make source selection invisible. Perplexity makes it the interface: every statement carries a number, every number is a URL, and you can read the whole set. That transparency is the most useful free diagnostic available to anybody working on AI visibility, whether or not Perplexity itself matters to your market.
What the visible pattern shows
- Sources skew towards pages narrowly about the question rather than pages broadly about the subject.
- First-hand publishers — the company that makes the thing, the body that regulates it, the practitioner who does it — are preferred over round-ups about them.
- Where the question is dated, recently revised pages are strongly favoured, and undated pages are frequently dropped entirely.
- The same source is rarely used for every sentence; the system deliberately spreads across several documents, so being one of five is a realistic target where being the single source is not.
- Short, dense pages appear far more often than their length would suggest.
Turn it into a working method
Not your brand name. The question somebody asks when they do not yet know you exist, in the language they would ask it in.
Open each source and find the passage that was used. It is usually obvious, and it is usually near the top of a page whose title matches the question closely.
Something you know first-hand that none of the cited pages states plainly. Not a better-written version of what is already there.
Title as the question, answer in the opening paragraph, condition and specifics attached, revision date visible.
This is retrieval, not training, so the turnaround is short. If the page is crawlable and it genuinely answers better, it tends to surface.
Perplexity is the free diagnostic for work you are doing anyway.
What does not work
Rewriting an existing page to be longer. Adding a keyword density. Publishing a comparison of yourself against competitors — these are read as what they are and cited rarely. And any service offering to place you in AI answers is describing something that does not exist as a purchasable product.
Questions this settles
Days to weeks once it is crawlable and indexed, because this is live retrieval rather than model training. There is no waiting for a new model release.
Visits arriving from an assistant tend to be small in number and unusually well-informed, because the person read a description of you before deciding to come. Judge it on what happens after the visit rather than on the volume.
No. Write pages that answer one question plainly and current, and they serve every assistant. A page built for one product is a page rebuilt when that product changes.
