Your clicks are falling while your brand is being read more

Impressions holding while clicks fall is usually not a ranking problem. It is an answer being given before the click. The work that follows is to be the source of that answer and to own the question that comes after it.

The report lands and it looks like a crisis. Organic sessions down a quarter year on year. Positions unchanged or better. Nothing technical broken. Marketing is asked what happened and has no story that fits the numbers.

Work out which pattern you are in

ImpressionsClicksPositionsMost likely cause
Flat or upDownFlat or upThe answer is being given above your result
DownDownDownAn ordinary ranking loss; treat it as one

Only the first row is the new phenomenon, and it is the one most often misdiagnosed as the second. Split the comparison by query type before deciding anything: informational questions behave completely differently from branded and transactional ones, and averaging them together hides the thing you are looking for.

What to do about the first row

1
Stop trying to win back the click

For a simple factual question, it is not coming back. Withholding the answer to force a visit makes you less likely to be the source and no more likely to be visited.

2
Be the source instead

The answer given above your result was composed from somebody's pages. Make it yours: answer in the opening paragraph, under a heading matching the question, with the specifics that a summary needs.

3
Own the next question

Questions come in chains. Publish the one that follows — the exception, the cost, the how-do-I — as its own page, and link it from the first.

4
Move your commercial intent down the chain

If the top of the chain no longer sends visits, the pages worth investing in are the ones where a person needs something an assistant cannot give them: your prices, your availability, your people, your method.

5
Change what you report

A dashboard measuring only sessions will describe this shift as failure for as long as it lasts. Add impressions by query type, assistant mentions, and the share of new business that arrives already informed.

Being read without being visited is a worse metric and a better position than being neither.

The part nobody likes

Some of this traffic was never worth much. A visit from somebody wanting one fact, who took the fact and left, was counted as a session and contributed nothing. Losing it looks dramatic in a chart and costs little in practice. The visits worth protecting are the ones further down the chain, and those are still available — they just have to be earned with pages that do something an assistant cannot.

Questions this settles

Is zero-click search really new?

The direction is not; the degree is. What is new is that a generated answer can settle a question that previously needed a page, rather than merely previewing one.

How do I show the business that being cited is worth anything?

Track what arriving buyers already know. When people reach a first conversation already understanding your method and pricing, something informed them, and that is the outcome this work produces.

Should I stop writing informational content?

No. Informational pages are what get read by assistants and what carry your name into composed answers. Change what you expect from them, not whether you publish them.
